Baby in accidental antibiotics overdose

December 12, 2007

A baby was given an overdose at a Manchester hospital in an apparent case of medical negligence, it has emerged.

Dylan Endsor is alleged to have been given ten times the recommended dose of an antibiotic at Stepping Hill after suffering from an apparent kidney infection.

Dylan re-entered hospital after his birth late last month due to his parents Rebecca Landon and Benjamin Endsor worrying about his refusing of food.

They have since discovered that a medical professional wrongly recommended the dosage of the drug, used to treat jaundice, during this stay.

Doctors now say that the baby's condition is now non-critical and that he does not have a kidney disease.

Neonatal medical negligence lawyer Stephanie Forman, who practices for Irwin Mitchell in the city, said that Dylan's case was "inexcusable".

She added: "It highlights the frequent problem of health service professionals failing to question/query colleagues recommendations which are at odds with current practice - in this case I anticipate that the dosage was at odds with a low weight infant."
