Stopping Bicycle Theft

The London Cycling Campaign is currently working to 'Beat The Thief' i.e. protecting cyclists against having their bicycle s stolen. They have suggested some new measures including; a code of practice for bike shops, increased secure parking provisions and tougher action against selling stolen bikes on websites.
There is also a call for a police anti-bike theft squad. When you consider that there were an estimated 60,000 bikes stolen last year in London, this sounds like a justified measure. However, with the expected budget cuts to public services (when someone eventually gets into government) I don't expect to see this any time soon.
