Should the Pope apologise or resign?

March 29, 2010

The Pope opened Holy Week yesterday amid fears that it could be overshadowed by the on-going child abuse scandal, which continues to rage through the Catholic Church. I think he's right to be fearful: last night 3 men from Verona appeared on Italian TV, watched by 3/4 million viewers being interviewed about how they were abused by priests when they were younger. Yesterday protesters gathered outside Westminster Abbey demanding the Pope's resignation. The Pope himself is under fire for being an accomplice to the cover up of child sex abuse, and victims from all over Europe have spoken out about the abuse that they suffered when they were younger. The Pope has been urged to make a public apology for the Church's years of covering up sexual abuse. Others are calling for him to resign. In the biggest crisis facing the Catholic Church it will be interesting to see what happens over the next few days.
