Regulation for the sale of traditional Chinese medicine

I was shocked to read about Patricia Booth whose health has been destroyed by taking Chinese herbal medicine for 5 years to combat acne. Her skin condition is much improved however her kidneys failed, she had a heart attack and developed urinary tract cancer. The tablets contained a banned substance (aristolochic acid). The Chinese herbal ‘doctor’ was given a 2 year conditional discharge. How could this happen? The sale of these herbal medicines is completely unsupervised. There is a clear gap in the law here which the government needs to address.
