Matthew Newbury has become the first man in Britain to be fitted with a new "bionic"leg. His left leg was amputated following a motorbike accident at the age of 15 . He was awarded £2.1 million in compensation following a successful personal injury claim. The £50,000 leg, made by German company called Otto Bock Healthcare, has improved the quality of his life. The Genium leg allows him to walk up stairs, walk backwards, cope with rough terrain and stand for long periods with his knee locked. It is controlled by a microprocessor and has a gyroscope and accelerometer, which measures gradient and speed and can also differentiate between when a person is standing still and walking. It also has 10 modes for activities including cycling, cross country skiing and golf. This amazing technology will massively improve the lives of amputees and will allow them a greater level of independence as the bionic leg can be claimed as part of their personal injury claims.
