MoD spends £600m on consultants

News out today that the MoD has spent £600,000,000 of its equipment budget is worrying. Clearly some of these contracts must be intended to compensate for redundancies and cuts to work that would previously have been done in-house, and we have found that farming out work in other areas can result in injury (and therefore military compensation), which costs the MoD and the taxpayer. In medicine, for example, when local NHS GP’s are brought in to help at the Med Centre on a base they often haven’t been trained to recognise something that’s common in the military, such as PTSD or compartment syndrome. The results can be devastating for the trusting Service patient, and for the doctor him or herself.
