HSE launch "load safety" campaign

July 13, 2010

The Health and Safety Executive have started a campaign to to try and prevent a work accident claim caused by unsecured loads on heavy goods vehicles. Statistics have been published confirming that unsafe loads on vehicle cause 1,200 accident at work claim every year. The HSE has indentifed that a work accident claim commonly occurs when people work at height on trailers, without being properly secured, leading to a real risk of falling off and suffering injury. The HSE advises that companies should ensure that steps and handholds are in good condition, to prevent an accident at work claim occurring due to falls from the cab of the vehicle, and that workers should wear clean, well-fitting, slip-resistant footwear when working on vehicles, whilst re-iterating the advice that they constantly give about using personal protective equipment given to them by their employers and following their employers manual handling procedures. It is good to see that the HSE are taking a keen interest in trying to prevent a work accident claim of this nature which, at the moment, occur all too frequently.
