Our priority is to provide excellent legal advice to achieve the best possible outcome in your claim, but also to assist you on a practical level to

  • adjust to the impact of your injuries;
  • minimise the ongoing effect on you and your family; and
  • and maximise your recovery or rehabilitation.

What is rehabilitation?

Whatever the nature of your injury or illness, rehabilitation improves your day to day life by increasing your ability to carry out everyday activities and reducing pain or restrictions.

Physical rehabilitation

Physical rehabilitation focuses on enhancing or restoring function and quality of life by rebuilding strength, power and agility, whilst reducing the impact of any ongoing physical restrictions or disability.
This can be achieved both through

  • therapies
  • treatments
  • the right aids and equipment.

Psychological and emotional rehabilitation

In order for physical rehabilitation to work, victims of injury often also need to address psychological issues.
The aims of psychological and emotional rehabilitation are different depending on the circumstances but can include:

  1. Treating psychological or psychiatric injuries such as anxiety, depression, or post traumatic stress disorder.
  2. This may take the form of cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness or other psychiatric therapies. It may also involve medication.
  3. To help you come to terms with the emotional impact of injury or illness, for example through counselling.
  4. To address the psychological and emotional effects of disability.

Therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and pain management programmes, are designed to

  • improve your sense of well being
  • maximise independence
  • improve your ability to do practical things
  • improve confidence and being socially active

Workplace or vocational rehabilitation

Workplace or rehabilitation is designed to assist those who have suffered an injury or illness to return to work or find alternative employment. This could be paid employment or voluntary work that have the potential to build confidence, give you a sense of purpose and enhance your quality of life.

Social rehabilitation

Social rehabilitation could cover any leisure or social activity. It may be a case of rebuilding confidence to enjoy a previous hobby, or to begin to attend social events again.
Alternatively, it could involve assistance in finding new activities or new ways to engage in previous activities.
Participating in social and leisure activities is very beneficial and

  • allows people to reintegrate themselves after an injury or illness
  • can prevent those with ongoing disabilities from feeling isolated because of their condition
  • can improve quality of life.

How can Bolt Burdon Kemp support you?

We understand that access to support services and rehabilitation at the earliest opportunity is vital. Out solicitors will immediately focus on improving the outcome for both you and your loved ones.

The early days following an injury are often hard and it can be difficult to see a way forward. By putting you in touch with the right people and services at the earliest opportunity, we can help you make your way through this difficult period. We will find you the support you need at the time when you need it most.

We are always looking for new and innovative ways to support our clients.

Support groups

We arranged and funded a support group run by a specialist psychiatrist to provide clients with claims against the same surgeon. This gave our clients the opportunity to attend group therapy and meet others who had been through a similar experience. We provided our clients with a support network and early access to counselling.

Early payments of compensation

Many of our clients have benefitted from substantial early payments of compensation. This money can be used to pay for treatment on a private basis to improve their chances of recovery. Alternatively, it may be used to purchase more advanced technology or equipment or to make adaptations around the home.

Even without early payments, we can still arrange therapy from the start of the claim.

Our partnerships with specialist organisations give our clients quick access to services without the need to wait for your medical negligence claim to be concluded.including

  • care and assistance
  • case management
  • medical treatment
  • various therapies including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, counselling, and speech and language therapy

We can offer you an assessment of your needs by a qualified professional who will recommend, develop and implement an individually-tailored package of rehabilitation and support services to meet your current and future needs. If you would like to discuss a claim with us to see whether we can arrange rehabilitation then contact our specialist solicitors..

What about the financial impact?

We appreciate that illness and injury can place a huge financial strain on you and your loved ones. Our specialist solicitors will work to secure early compensation payments for you where ever possible to relieve this strain.
You may also be eligible for various disability related benefits and other state funded assistance. As part of our range of support services we can also arrange comprehensive benefits advice and an assessment of your welfare entitlement.

Further support

In addition to providing direct access to key services, Bolt Burdon Kemp can help you find other sources of support and assistance. This may include putting you in contact with other specialist organisations.

The support you require will depend on your circumstances and the nature of your injuries. Many of our clients also benefit from local authority or government assistance with aids and equipment, transportation and adaptations to their homes. Further information on government services and support for those with disabilities is available.

£70,000 settlement for rogue doctor’s negligence

Our client underwent a surgical procedure by rogue doctor Rod Irvine in 2006. During the operation, Irvine failed to repair bowel incisions, which caused further complications to our client. Irvine was already facing hundreds of claims from previous patients. However, we won the case and negotiated a settlement of £70,000.
