January 20, 2010

A new study estimates that 20mph zones could potentially prevent up to 700 casualties in London alone. The study by The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine study estimates that at 20mph, only one in forty pedestrians is killed in a crash compared to one in five chance for someone hit at 30mph. The study found that the greatest reduction would be to children under the age of 11. They also found that cyclist’s injuries fell by 17% in 20 mph zones.
