HSE clamping down on asbestos exposure
August 23, 2010
Despite the massive amounts of press coverage that it gets, building and construction firms are still not heeding the warnings and are allowing their employees to become exposed to asbestos in the workplace, resulting in the numbers of people making an accident at work claim remaining far too high. An estimated 4,000 people a year are still dying due to asbestos-related diseases to which they were exposed in their workplace. The Health and Safety Executive are doing their utmost to bring this to the attention of building firms and construction companies, launching their "Hidden Killer" campaign last year, as well as continuing to investigate and prosecute companies who breach the Control of Asbestos Regulations. Just last week, the HSE released details of three companies whom they have recently prosecuted for breach of these Regulations, one on a ship but, much more worryingly, at a school and at a shopping centre.
