Are bicycle helmets a red herring?

I was shocked to discover that British cyclists are three times more likely to die in an accident than Dutch cyclists, per miles travelled. The fact that only 3% of Dutch cyclists wear a helmet whereas the number of British helmet wearers is closer to 30% is even more bewildering. These sobering statistics indicate that the Government is wasting time and money looking into whether helmets should be made compulsory. Instead they should look at Dutch roads and see how they compare with British cycling conditions. It may give a better insight into why we are so much more likely to be killed than our Dutch counterparts.
